Tour the fundamentals of painting the small creatures at the Artisan.
Instructors, Stephanie West and Wendy Ahlm will teach you how!
The bonus? Ollie Greer will be available to share special information about his bugs during the workshop.
Students will:
- Experience wet-on-wet watercolor painting
- Learn how to paint with gouache
- Learn how to paint transparent wings
- Learn how to make and use masking
- Draw with fine point marker
Bring Your Own Materials
- Pencil
- Spray bottle with H2O inside
- Paper Towels
- Plastic cup to hold water
- Watercolors (12 or more colors) (Dry or Tube style)
- Watercolor brushes, a small, medium, and large round of any of the following sizes: 2, 4, 6, 8
- Watercolor paper: 140lb block (Size 9×12″ or smaller) or a sheet of Arches 140lb 22×30″ white or bright white (torn into 4 pieces)
- White Gouache
- Masking Fluid: Fineline® Pen, Supernib – Fine Tip
- Sharpie: black fine line
- Thin white acrylic paint pen or thin white marker that will draw over watercolor and gouache
Level: All Levels
ADVANCED: We will show examples of bugs painting on pre-painted landscapes, a beetle painted on black paper (by Wendy) using iridescent materials Artisans carries. These will be examples of advancing technique for students who want to go further in their art.

Artist Bios:
Stephanie West and Wendy Ahlm belong to the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico. Both are in leadership roles in the non-profit group to connect and help people who are passionate about painting and being in nature. They each paint in watercolor, pastel, and oils and are experienced teachers.
